A Breakdown of the New Stage Designs
Steel Challenge has released the eight 2026 Provisional Stage Candidates, giving shooters an early look at what may become part of future SCSA matches. These stages were selected from over a hundred submissions and grouped into two families based on the plate set geometry they use. Unlike the classic Steel Challenge stages, these candidates introduce fresh sight pictures, unusual spacing, and new transition challenges while remaining faithful to the sport’s standardized simplicity.
According to the release, the intention is for clubs to use these as unofficial stages until SCSA members vote on two finalists in late 2026 or early 2027.
Here is an overview of all eight stages, organized by the plate-set family shown in the official document.
These four stages mirror the layout style of the classic “Outer Limits” stage—wide transitions, varied distances, and large rectangle plates.
The second family draws from the “Speed Option” style—focuses on rhythm, moderate transitions, and large rectangular stop plates.
As clubs begin experimenting with these designs through 2026, data and shooter feedback will shape which two stages will be added in the end of 2026 / start of 2027 Steel Challenge rule book.
