What Is Steel Challenge?
Steel Challenge is a speed shooting sport that focuses on shooting steel plates in a fixed array as fast and accurately as possible. It’s often described as the most accessible and addictive form of competitive shooting — easy to understand, hard to master.
Hosted by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), this sport is a perfect entry point for new shooters and a sharpening tool for seasoned competitors.
How It Works
Steel Challenge consists of 8 standardized stages, each featuring 5 steel targets placed at fixed positions and distances. Shooters are timed from the buzzer until the last shot rings out, with the best 4 out of 5 runs counting toward your stage score.
Unlike IDPA or USPSA, Steel Challenge has:
- No movement required
- No concealment or complex stage planning
- No scoring zones — you just hit the plate or you don’t
⏱ Scoring
- Each stage is shot five times, except Outer Limits, which is shot four times.
- The fastest four runs are added for your total stage time.
- The shooter with the lowest combined time across all stages wins.
The 8 Official Stages
Each stage is standardized, meaning they’re the same no matter where you shoot:
- Smoke & Hope – Fastest stage; wide-open targets
- Roundabout – Tight transitions; accuracy matters
- Five to Go – Distance challenge with straight-line shots
- Showdown – Shooters must start facing uprange on 2 strings
- Speed Option – Includes a bonus 18" plate for advanced tactics
- Pendulum – Tight accuracy test with swinging targets
- Accelerator – Mix of near/far targets and speed
- Outer Limits – Only stage requiring movement
Steel Challenge Divisions
Steel Challenge is unique in that you can shoot multiple divisions in one match. Divisions fall under two categories:
Rimfire Divisions (no holster needed):
- RFPI – Rimfire Pistol Iron Sights
- RFPO – Rimfire Pistol Open
- RFRI – Rimfire Rifle Iron Sights
- RFRO – Rimfire Rifle Open
Centerfire Pistol Divisions (draw from holster):
- Limited – Iron sights, no optics
- Production – Factory-compliant pistols
- Single Stack – Classic 1911-style pistols
- Carry Optics – Red dot on slide
- Open – Full race guns, comps, and optics
- Revolver Iron/Open – Wheel guns, baby!
PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine):
- PCCI – Iron sights
- PCCO – Optics
